by Ally Condie

Oh my goodness...can you believe it? I actually read an entire book! That is probably very believable for most. However, over the past few weeks/months, my reading skills have been ATROCIOUS. I blame it on wifi, cable, ondemand, and access to netflix (seriously, The Walking Dead is the most addicting show). Reading just had lost its place as my priority. And as such, it has been a long time since I've read a book in its entirety. A really long time since I've sat down and done nothing but read until the book was finished. It is very appropriate that the book that would break me out of my reading funk is Reached by Ally Condie.

Matched holds a very special place in my heart (my review). It is amongst the first YA books that I discovered on my journey as YA reader and writer. Thanks to daily emails from Alice Marvels, I started becoming far more aware of YA books available for my reading enjoyment (thanks to her again, I've just realized that Prodigy (Legend #2) by Marie Lu came out today | January 29th). And Matched with its pretty green cover and promise of a romance had me going to the bookstore and picking up a copy on its release date.

As was my tradition, on the release date of Reached, I went to the bookstore and bought a copy. Two months later...I finally read it. And just that feeling you get when all you do is read until the last page...it is probably my favorite feeling in the world.

And finally...after many a month...Imaginative Adventure once again returns to the world of YA books with a review...

Reached (Matched #3)
By Ally Condie
HardcoverDutton512 pages
Published November 13th 2012 by Penguin

After leaving Society to desperately seek The Rising, and each other, Cassia and Ky have found what they were looking for, but at the cost of losing each other yet again. Cassia is assigned undercover in Central city, Ky outside the borders, an airship pilot with Indie. Xander is a medic, with a secret. All too soon, everything shifts again. (Goodreads summary)
Reached is the third book in the story of Cassia, Ky and Xander. When we first meet each of them in Matched, they are society's creations. And their rebellion goes as small as a stolen poem and a forbidden kiss. In this book, the society is destroyed, the Rising is gaining power, and Cassia, Ky and Xander are faced with an incredible task.
I'm a little out of practice on book reviews, so this might not be the most thought out analysis. However, I think the most important thing to note about this book is that it took me out of my reading slump. And for always, I will call it amazing because of that.

Is Reached amazing? Not necessarily. There are definitely flaws. It could have used a bit more punch. The romance could have been heightened. The ending could have used a little more finesse. But overall, as the conclusion to this wonderful series, it was great. There is just something so beautiful, sad and triumphant about reading the last chapters of a book series.

There is just something so beautiful, sad and triumphant about reading! Reading transports you. It yanks at the corners of your imagination and draws you deep into the pages. And whether or not the story is everything you hope it will be, if a book has that ability to transport you and there by transform you, it is worth reading.

Ally Condie has an amazing way with words that leaves you feeling like you weren't just reading the story but living it. And I lived this book series. This series makes me want to read and read and read and read and read. Reached emphasizes the beauty of the freedom to create.

So, read this book. Or just simply read. Because books are beautiful.

  1. Okay, that made me laugh, ha. "Snide remarks?" I've never seen that before, but how appropriate.

I really liked your review and I'm glad the book transported you. I like books that do that too.
