Hedgehog on a Blog

Welcoming Ernest Hemingway

Well, it happened! Despite a few parental inquiries as to whether we were serious about getting a hedgehog, I did. I claimed him from a bizarre house in the Chicago burbs that was said to house over 102 hedgehogs, two large mastiffs, and probably lots of other abnormal creatures, including the breeders themselves.

Though we went with the intentions to call him Redginald, he quickly became nameless again as we brainstormed new names. After a series of first and last name combos, one of which was Dustin Hoffman, we finally settled on his current name, Ernest Hemingway (Ernie Hedgingway).

Why?
1. Ernest Hemingway was an author in the 20s who lived in France and drank cognac. All of which are things I love.
2. 'Hem' is the Swedish word for Home.
3. Ernest Hemingway was known to be a bit prickly and ornery, and well, hedgehogs are very prickly and ornery.
4. Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Il. Ernie the hedgehog was born in Villa Park, Il.
5. Ernest Hemingway loved exploring Africa. Ernie is an African Pygmy Hedgehog.

So many valid reasons.

He is adjusting. He has taken well to his hiding spots. Is doing his best to be potty trained. Eating and drinking appropriate amounts. And being agreeable during the times we force him to be so. Which usually entails us taking him from his cozy hut and making him pose for pictures in random locations.

He is far lower maintenance than I think I let him be. And though he causes a destruction in his room, he has yet to do anything destructive to either his food or water dish. I think he is well behaved and as the days and weeks go by, will become even more so. He is swell.

Ernest Hemingway wishes you a marvelous Thursday.

  1. 6) Ernest Hemingway was a decent writer. Ernie's caretaker writes unparalleled prose. I have high hopes that Ernie will one day become the first literate African Pygmy Hedgehog in the western hemisphere.
